University and college students in Kenya are once again glued to their phones and HELB portals as the Higher Education Loans Board continues releasing upkeep and tuition funds in carefully sequenced batches for the 2026/2027 academic year.
For many comrades living on tight budgets, these batch numbers are the difference between settling fees and rent arrears, buying food, and staying focused on class.
Community updates circulating on Facebook student groups this week list several batch numbers that have already been marked paid, while others sit in the queue or face verification hurdles under the old funding model.

This Week’s Progress: New Batches in the Pipeline
Several additional batch numbers were assigned this week and are currently awaiting disbursement: 7067, 7086, 7090, 7094, 7096, and 7104.
Community monitors indicate that batches 7067 (bank option), 7079 (M-Pesa/wallet option), and 7104 (bank option) stand a strong chance of moving tomorrow. Some of these newly assigned batches, along with others still pending assignment, appear targeted at first-year students and those under the old funding model.
Batches still reported as unpaid in recent checks include 6873, 6874, and 6876. Patience remains the watchword for those still waiting.
What exactly is a HELB batch number?

A batch number is essentially a tracking number used to group students whose funding is being processed for disbursement.

In practical terms, seeing a batch number is important because it means your application has moved beyond some of the earlier stages of processing.

HELB’s student portal allows students to follow their applications from loan application through allocation and disbursement status.

But comrades should make one distinction:

Having a batch number does not automatically mean the money is already in your account.

The batch still has to go through the disbursement process.

So, how long should you wait after allocation?

This is where many students get confused.

There is no fixed number of days published by HELB that guarantees payment after a student reaches the allocation stage or receives a batch number.

The process can move at different speeds depending on the batch, payment channel, verification requirements and HELB’s disbursement schedule.

That means a student whose portal says Allocated should not necessarily expect the money the following day.

Likewise, a student who has received a batch number should not assume that the funds must appear within a specific number of days.

The safest way to understand the process is:

Application → Assessment/allocation → Batch assignment → Disbursement → Funds received

The timing between those stages can vary.

What happens after a batch is assigned?

Once a batch number has been assigned, the next major step is disbursement.

For students receiving upkeep, HELB says funds can be credited to the student’s bank account or mobile money account, depending on the payment option provided. Tuition funds, meanwhile, are remitted directly to the institution.

This is why two comrades with similar portal statuses may experience different things.

One student may see the funds in a bank account while another using a mobile-money option may still be waiting for the wallet process or notification to be completed.

For M-Pesa users, HELB’s published instructions state that students can access upkeep funds through the HELB service on M-Pesa and through the *642# USSD service.

What if your portal still says allocated?

Don’t panic immediately.

Student-reported updates often move faster than changes appearing on individual portals. HELB has also previously indicated that different students can be at different stages of allocation and disbursement.

In one August 2026 case, a student complained about remaining at the allocation stage without a batch number. HELB responded that it had contacted the student and provided guidance.

The important point is that the portal should not be the only thing students watch.
