The government has described the construction of the 10,000-seater Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, as a major milestone in its efforts to transform Kenya into a world-class sporting nation while creating jobs and unlocking opportunities in the sports economy.

Speaking during an inspection of the project, Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi said the stadium will become the flagship sporting facility in the North Rift and reflects the government’s commitment to developing sports talent and supporting economic growth.

He said the facility is being built to international standards and will feature a FIFA-compliant football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, a modern VIP pavilion, changing rooms and other supporting amenities.

Beyond sports, the stadium will also house film and music studios, ICT innovation hubs and enterprise-support facilities aimed at creating a vibrant ecosystem where sports, technology and the creative economy can thrive together.

“Kamariny Stadium will serve as a cradle for the next generation of Kenyan sporting icons by providing athletes with a world-class environment to train, compete and realise their full potential,” Mwangi said.

He noted that the project will also strengthen grassroots talent identification and support the government’s agenda of positioning sports as a key driver of national development.

The PS said construction of the stadium is already generating employment opportunities for hundreds of young people while boosting businesses and livelihoods in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

He described the project as an example of how strategic investment in sports infrastructure can stimulate inclusive economic growth and create opportunities for local communities.

Upon completion, Mwangi said the stadium will place Elgeyo Marakwet among counties with world-class sporting facilities capable of hosting continental and international competitions.

He added that the project will reinforce Kenya’s reputation as a global athletics powerhouse and further position the country as Africa’s premier sporting destination.

According to the PS, the Kamariny Stadium project is part of the government’s wider strategy to modernise sports infrastructure across the country, commercialise the sports sector and expand opportunities for athletes and communities alike.
