Governor Nyong’o Meets Stakeholders as SGR Line Construction To Malaba Begins In March

Construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase 2B and 2C from Naivasha to Kisumu and onward to Malaba is set to begin in March, marking a major milestone in the expansion of Kenya’s rail infrastructure.

The 269-kilometre extension from Suswa/Naivasha to Kisumu will include approximately 83 kilometres within Kisumu County, passing through Sondu, Ahero and Kisumu Town before proceeding toward Malaba via Kisumu West Sub-County.

Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the county had convened a consultative meeting with key stakeholders ahead of the groundbreaking. The meeting brought together Members of Parliament and Members of County Assembly from affected areas, alongside officials from Kenya Railways led by Managing Director Phillip Maingi, senior representatives from the National Land Commission, and national government officials led by Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa.

“The County Government’s priorities are clear: meaningful local participation, job creation for youth and skilled professionals, inclusion of local enterprises in procurement and supply chains, responsible environmental management, fair and transparent engagement with affected communities and alignment of the railway corridor with sustainable urban and industrial planning,” Nyong’o stated.

Discussions focused on compensation for Project Affected Persons (PAPs), youth participation in construction works and the broader social and economic impact of the railway corridor.

Governor Nyong’o outlined the county government’s priorities, which include meaningful local participation, job creation for youth and skilled professionals, inclusion of local enterprises in procurement and supply chains, responsible environmental management, and transparent engagement with affected communities. He added that the railway alignment must support sustainable urban and industrial planning in the region.

The meeting resolved that all relevant agencies will carry out grassroots consultations in local villages as implementation begins to ensure communities are directly involved in the transformative infrastructure project.
