The Government has announced plans to accelerate construction of the Rironi-Mau Summit Road, with Roads Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir saying the project is expected to be completed and opened by June 2027, ahead of the next General Election.
Chirchir said construction would gather pace in the coming weeks, with sections of the road from Rironi towards Naivasha expected to begin receiving tarmac by September 30, 2026, as part of the planned upgrade to a dual carriageway.
Once completed, the upgraded road will have three lanes in the direction of Naivasha and another three lanes towards Nairobi, significantly expanding capacity along the busy corridor.
The CS described the Rironi–Mau Summit Road as a consequential and important transport corridor, saying the Government was adopting a new construction approach to ensure works are visible and progress is made simultaneously along different sections.
He explained that the traditional model, in which a single contractor works progressively along one section of a major road, can make construction appear slow to residents in other parts of the corridor.
Chirchir cited roads such as Chemusot and Kimondi, where a single contractor may be undertaking works on one side of the project while residents in other sections wait to see construction activity begin.
Under the new strategy for the Rironi–Mau Summit Road, a major company will work alongside nearly 90 other companies, with the entire corridor divided into sections of five kilometres each.
Different companies will undertake works on separate five-kilometre sections at the same time, allowing construction to progress at multiple points along the corridor rather than waiting for one section to be completed before moving to the next.
According to Chirchir, the approach is designed to significantly shorten the construction period and ensure motorists and residents see activity across the entire corridor.
The Government is now targeting completion and opening of the full Rironi–Mau Summit Road by June 2027, meaning the project would be delivered within the targeted one-year period.
The acceleration is expected to transform one of the country’s key transport corridors by increasing road capacity and improving movement between Nairobi, Naivasha and the wider western Kenya route.
