Auctioneers have taken over former Nation FM radio presenter Angela Angwenyi’s posh house at Jacaranda Gardens estate in Nairobi to recover a debt she owes.
It has emerged that Ms Angwenyi, the once high-flying radio presenter, slid into financial difficulties after being named in corrupt dealings associated with the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal.
Garam Auctioneers on Monday placed a notice in the newspapers announcing the planned auction of the apartment, which is part of Jacaranda estate along Kamiti Road after the Northern Bypass. It is not clear how much she owes and to whom.
Ms Angwenyi was named in the National Youth Service scandal since her company, Out of the Box Solutions Limited, had won a consultancy contract worth Ksh302 million to publicise tenders for women and the youth.
She was at pains to show value for the Ksh90 million she had already been paid as the contract did not have specific deliverables. Out of the Box Solutions Ltd was awarded the contract to carry out a campaign to enhance access to 30% of government tenders reserved for women, youth and people living with disabilities.
Ms Angwenyi won the tender while still working at Nation Media Group but retired from radio later.
During the session with PAC, Ms Angwenyi said she had only been paid 30% of the amount that had been agreed in the contract. “We only have been paid Ksh90,737,607, which is 30% of the total amount agreed, upon presenting approval documents of the campaign conception,” explained Ms Angwenyi.

Ms Angwenyi disclosed that she had done 60% of the work, and was yet to receive the remaining amount, several months after completing the work. The National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), however, went ahead and stopped payments.
Ms Angwenyi has yet to appear in court. Among those embroilled in a high-profile case arising from the scandal are former Youth Affairs and Gender principal secretary Lillian Omollo whose seven bank accounts with Sh20.6 million were frozen as were those of her children — Sheela Mbogo, Stephanie Mbogo and Shalom Kamwetu — which had Ksh12.5 million.
