Finnish President Alexander Stubb, together with his wife Suzanne Innes-Stubb, touched down in Nairobi on Monday, kicking off a three-day state visit aimed at deepening ties between Finland and Kenya.

The visit, which marks Stubb’s first trip to Kenya since taking office as the 13th President of Finland in 2024, aims to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations seeking to expand cooperation in trade, technology and sustainable development.

The Finnish leader was warmly welcomed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba just before 4:00 a.m.

“On behalf of His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto, I received His Excellency Alexander Stubb, the President of the Republic of Finland, together with his spouse, on arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for a State Visit to Kenya,” Kindiki posted on X.

Majorly, Stubb’s visit centres on high-level talks with President Ruto, focusing on global issues impacting Kenya, Africa at large, and Europe, as well as cooperation to strengthen mutual international institutions. Key sectors under discussion include renewable energy, digital innovation, and education, with both nations eager to share their strengths.

The talks will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Uhuru Gardens, a symbolic gesture of mutual respect, shared values and history.

Later on Monday evening, President Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto will host the Finnish couple at a state banquet, further cementing the personal and diplomatic bonds between the two nations.

Broadly, Stubb’s visit combines diplomacy, education, and economic goals. A day before leaving, he will speak at the University of Nairobi about geopolitics and the changing global order, engaging students in a discussion on world affairs.

He will also meet representatives of local NGOs and foreign policy experts to discuss regional dynamics and social development, spotlighting Kenya’s role in contributing to Africa’s success.

The visit will culminate in his attendance at the closing event of the EU–Kenya Business Forum, where he is set to deliver a keynote address.
