Equity Group Chief Executive James Mwangi has been taken to court for allegedly grabbing a three- acre piece of land in Muthaiga, Nairobi County belonging to a private company.

Mount Pleasant Limited is accusing Dr. Mwangi of using the police to push them out of their own land and staking legal claim to the land.

The aggrieved party claims that the Chief Executive who recently won the prestigious 2020 Oslo Business for Peace Award showed up at the location of the land on June 15, 2020, together with police officers and kicked out the guards and installed his own people.

According to Mount Pleasant Ltd, the property registered under Land Reference No 214/20/2 was bought from former finance minister Arthur Magugu and his wife Margaret Wairimu at Ksh130 million on July 21, 2006.

Mwangi and his fellow respondent, Jane Wangui Mundia, allegedly bought the land at Ksh306 million in 2013.

This is not the first time that Mount Pleasant is finding itself in a land tussle.

In 2013, John Birech, a city businessman filed an encroachment complaint claiming that the company had encroached on LR No 214/20/2/1 and LR No 214/20/2/2.

In its counter, Mount Pleasant accused Mr Birech of trying to grab the land which culminated into Birech being charged with forgery but was acquited on July, 5, 2019.

A land search conducted in 2015 could not establish the real owner of the land forcing Mount Pleasant to file a missing file complaint.

In 2016 Mount Pleasant got its first victory after it was issued with a certificate confirming ownership of the land.

It is claimed that the land register was tampered with to clear evidence to clear details of successive ownership.

Mwangi was yet to comment on the matter by the time of publishing this article.
