Three people have been arrested by police in Eldoret City after allegedly attempting to scam several youths into making fake job applications to a foreign country.

The trio, according to the authorities, duped the youths, who came from far interior villages of Uasin Gishu, into believing they would secure lucrative jobs in Dubai immediately after submitting their applications.

“Those involved came all the way to Ziwa and promised us that the jobs existed and that those unskilled would earn about Ksh38,000 while the skilled would get over Ksh60,000,” said Job Kipkosgey, one of the victims.

But upon arriving in Eldoret, Kipkosgey recounted, they were herded into a single hotel room and given application forms written in Chinese, with the suspected scammers claiming that a Chinese company would hire them.

After that, he continued, they were all taken to an unknown location outside town in Annex, soon before the police caught wind of the scheme.

“At Annex, the youths were taken to a residential home, raising suspicion. We received an alert and immediately dispatched officers who arrested the three suspects,” said Uasin Gishu DCI boss Daniel Muleli.

Thankfully, the officers managed to arrest the suspects before they collected the money they had instructed the youths to pay as application fees.

“One of those arrested claims to be the CEO of an agency, which, however, does not have the authority to operate in this area,” stated DCI Muleli. “We will investigate the matter thoroughly to uncover the truth before taking further action or advising on the next steps.”

Meanwhile, the three suspects remain in custody as the police work to record statements from the victims to aid in the investigations.
