Eight Well-paying Businesses You Can Successfully Run From Home

Times are changing, and depending solely on employment to earn money is not a good idea. A side ‘hustle’ is the order of the day for many working-class people, and it doesn’t need a lot of effort to start.

All you need is motivation, a willingness to work hard and a desire to be financially successful. Below are some ideas you can try out:

1. Freelance Writing

Freelance writers can write articles on any topic, from anywhere. A good way to start is by writing about subjects in which you are already an expert. Ghostwriting is a good pursuit for freelancers looking for money and willing to forgo a byline. Websites are always on the lookout for quality freelancers, too. Create a website to promote your freelance writing business.

2. Proposal/Grant Writing Business

The grant writer is the vital link between a funder and a grant seeker. Grant writers work as independent contractors, full- or part-time development officers, and freelancers. Nonprofit organizations account for the largest percentage of grant seekers.

Grant writers can apply for a myriad of categories of funding, including project grants, general operating grants, endowment grants, restricted grants, startup funding, matching grants, and challenge grants. You only need to market yourself and can do it online from home.

3. Website Consultant

Every Tom, Díck and Harry wants a website these days, but they don’t know how to do it themselves. If you are running any kind of business today, a website is just as important as naming your business.

From hosting domain names to managing web content, a website consultant builds and maintains websites. Having an understanding of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a plus. As a website consultant, you will need experience in links, banners and affiliate programs, and a talent for graphics and copywriting.

Regardless of the business you take up, you will need to be in control of finances to ensure healthy cashflow. Xolo’s guide provides insights into financial management, highlighting some of the common mistakes that often lead to cash leaks.

4. Data entry

Perhaps not the most thrilling of part-time pursuits, but data entry can nevertheless offer an extremely steady (not to mention flexible) source of extra income. You generally get paid for the number of entries you make rather than by the hour, which means you can go back and forth to it when you get a spare few minutes, anywhere.

5. Online surveys

It’s possible to make pocket money by filling in internet surveys – though moneymagpie.com advises caution, as there are hundreds of bogus companies on the net. With campaigns underway, popularity surveys can pay.

6. Online referrals/affiliate marketing

There’s money to be made from your email address book: a surprising number of companies will pay you if you can persuade your friends to become their customers. This mostly applies to online malls such as Kilimall or Jumia.

7. Selling ad space on a personal blog

This is not a big money-earner to start with but could be if you work at it. Set up your own blog (do it for free with blogger.com) and fill it with great writing, photos, videos and anything else you’re passionate about. Get ads automatically through Google Adsense and make a few pence every time someone clicks on an ad.”

Also, you can do book reviews on your blog and make money by selling the books through Amazon’s affiliate programme.

8. Virtual assistant

Many ultra-busy professionals appreciate having someone who can check and answer their email, organise task lists for them, update their calendars and so on, with minimal interaction. You can provide this service from home with a good internet connection, and earn yourself some extra coins.
