The High Court of Kenya has placed D.T. Dobie & Company (Kenya) Limited, a long-standing fixture in the nation’s automotive sector, under liquidation with an official receiver taking the reins to wind down the insolvent motor vehicle dealer.
Mark Gakuru confirmed his appointment as the official receiver and liquidator, effective August 15, following a special resolution passed by the company on June 3, 2025. This move signals the formal beginning of the company’s dissolution process.
Creditors of D.T. Dobie have been instructed to lodge their claims by September 15, 2025. Submissions must include full particulars of debts using Form Number 5 (Proof of Debts), accessible via the government’s eCitizen portal. Failure to comply by the deadline risks exclusion from any distribution of the company’s assets.
D.T. Dobie, incorporated in Kenya over 50 years ago, built its reputation on distributing globally recognized automotive brands. Its liquidation underscores the financial distress faced by the company, which is unable to meet debts of KSh 100,000 or more.
The appointment of a liquidator immediately transfers all control from the company’s directors. The official receiver’s mandate is to take charge of D.T. Dobie’s assets, oversee their sale, and distribute the proceeds to creditors. The outcome for creditors will hinge on the company’s financial position, with potential for partial recovery or losses if liabilities outstrip available assets. While liquidations can be voluntary, this action stems from a court order, highlighting the judicial oversight in the process.
