Columnist Njoki Chege has landed a new managerial job at the Aga Khan University. The journalist cum blogger who is the brains behind the prominent City Girl column that runs on Saturday Nation, has been appointed as the Director, Innovation Centre and Projects at the Graduate School of Media and Communications (GMSC) of the Aga Khan University.

The former Nation Editor holds a Masters of Arts Degree in Communication from Daystar University, Nairobi and is currently undertaking her PhD in Media Studies. She is doing her PhD at the Aga Khan University (her current employers).

Njoki Chege, however, had previously hinted of the new job in an article dated July 12.

“So, after nine-and-a-half years of working in the media, I have finally left the industry,” she wrote, “It so happened that sometime last month, great folks at Aga Khan University decided that I should work for them and after serious prayer and reflection, I took the decision to give the job a try.”

Njoki’s column, City Girl, has successfully run for five years and it has impressed and angered Kenyans in equal measure. She was sure to mention that the job offer couldn’t have come at a better time as it was her column’s fifth anniversary.

She talked about her experience working in the media and termed her new job as challenging. The City Girl columnist said she has witnessed the disruption of media by digital border-less publishing. However, the media industry has grown now.

“What worked then is no longer viable and any media practitioner will tell you that things are not as rosy as they were five years ago,” she wrote describing the growth of the industry.

The Aga Khan University trusts that Njoki will bring them significant networks and connections in the Kenyan Media space and with a potential to deepen these across the region.

She was welcomed officially in an internal memo seen by Business Today.

“In her role as Director, Innovation Centre, Njoki will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality value-added services to the media innovators and enterpreneurs and will oversee the proper implementation of the center’s strategic planning process. Please join me as we welcome Njoki to the AKU family,” the memo written by the Dean of GMSC at AKU, Dr Alex Awiti, read in part.

  • Congratulations. However her former employers and current employers are siblings. Not likely to change her style of writing.but jumping from dad to mum ensures a soft landing. My take though
