Collins Injera, Kenya’s all-time rugby sevens  try-scorer, on Tuesday, January 24 announced his retirement from the sport. Looking forward to spending more time with family, he said “it’s time to step away from this great game that has given me so much more than I could ever ask for.”

Injera retires in second place on the all-time World rugby sevens try-scorers chart, thanks to 271 tries over the course of his career, behind England’s Dan Norton with 338. He was part of Kenya’s squad at the 2016 Singapore Sevens where Kenya made history with its first tournament win in the World Rugby Sevens Series, beating Fiji 30-7 in the final.

Injera also disclosed that following his retirement, he would be joining satellite technology firm Avanti Communications in “an exciting new role” to support its operations in East Africa, while also continuing his humanitarian work. Avanti is a UK-based company that provides satellite connectivity in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Injera is the holder of a degree in PR, Advertising and Applied Communication from Daystar University.

He started playing rugby at Vihiga High School in Vihiga county. After an early stint at Ulinzi RFC, he joined Mwamba RFC where his club career flourished. He made his debut for Kenya Sevens at the 2006 Dubai Sevens. He was the top try-scorer of the 2008/09 IRB Rugby Sevens series. He has also played for Kenya’s 15s rugby team.

For his incredible achievements, Injera was inducted into the Fiji Rugby Hall of Fame earlier in January – the latest in his long list of accolades.
