Kenya continues to experience a high adoption rate of mobile money with a total subscriber base of 42,302,833 in October – December 2024.

This is according to the latest report by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

Of this number, Airtel Money has a market share of 8.9%, translating to 3,764,952 customers. During the previous quarter report, Airtel Money had a market share of 7.6% of the 40,633,292 mobile money subscribers then.

The growth by Airtel Money has been attributed to its enhanced interoperability, enabling Kenyans to access, send money and make payments regardless of the network it is originating from or going to.

A closer look at Mpesa, the country’s leading mobile money platform indicates that the company has lost its market share by 1.3% in the three-month reporting period.

SIM Subscriptions

The total number of SIM subscriptions in the country is 71,375,093, a penetration rate of 138.5%. Of this number, Airtel has a total of 21,517,842 subscribers, translating to a market share of 30.15%. During the previous quarter report (July – September 2024), Airtel had 20,740,558 subscribers, highlighting a growth in subscriber numbers by 777,284 customers, a 3.75% growth rate in the three months.

Airte’s Secret to Growth

In the recent times, Airtel has been on an aggressive network expansion, rolling out almost 1000 network sites last year, the largest ever network rollout in the history of the company’s operations in the country.

Today, with a network footprint of over 4200 network sites, Airtel not only boasts of wide coverage and network reach but also enhanced indoor coverage in major towns and cities across the country. Last year, the company expanded its network coverage extensively in the North Eastern region of the country, a zone where Airtel’s reach was initially limited.

Early this year, Airtel launched ‘Smarta Bundles’, a first of its kind comprehensive product package that offers enhanced Airtel Money benefits by reimbursing customers their transaction fees as Airtime when they transact with Airtel Money. On top of this, the product provides for the rollover of unused daily bundle resources, enabling customers to always stay connected.

Airtel Money has been on an onslaught of the Kenyan market through partnerships and prominent market presence. With strategic partners such as KCB, Naivas, Moja Expressway among others, Airtel Money is offering Kenyans a choice at value for money mobile money services.

The company has also expanded its agent and dedicated Airtel Money branches footprint across the country.
