Absa Bank Kenya has unveiled La Riba Sultanah, the country’s first Shariah-compliant banking account specifically designed to empower women entrepreneurs.

The move aims to enhance financial inclusion and support women in achieving financial independence while growing their businesses.

The new account allows users to manage their finances easily, grow their savings, and access Shariah-compliant personal and business financing.

Customers can also benefit from mentorship programs, networking opportunities, and access to markets through business clubs and partner conferences.

Speaking during the launch, Absa Bank Kenya Chief Finance Officer Yusuf Omari said the Sultanah account was built with visionary businesswomen in mind.

“La Riba Sultanah is designed to empower women without compromising their values. It reflects our continued efforts to support all segments of the economy by providing inclusive, ethical, and innovative financial solutions that enable our customers to thrive,” he said.

Omari emphasised that the initiative targets women who have historically been excluded from the financial system.

“Through Sultanah, we are bridging this gap by providing them with the right tools for financial management, savings, and investment that align with their faith, values, and ambitions,” he explained.

In addition to the account, customers will have access to a Shariah-compliant credit card with benefits such as cashbacks, discounts, complimentary health check-ups, wellness packages at partner clinics, and programs for education and career advancement.

The launch coincided with the 2025 Absa Annual Islamic Conference in Nairobi, which brought together scholars, industry leaders, and policymakers to discuss the legal framework surrounding Islamic finance.

A major highlight of the event was the establishment of the Association of Shariah Compliant Services Providers of Kenya.

The association will focus on advocacy, research, and policy guidance to promote Islamic finance as a model for financial inclusion.

Absa Bank Kenya has been a pioneer in Islamic banking, having introduced Shariah-compliant banking in the country two decades ago.

The bank’s La Riba offerings are based on Murabaha, an Islamic finance principle that prohibits transactions involving interest, and are developed in consultation with Absa Bank’s independent Shariah Board.

Omari added that La Riba banking is not only for Muslim customers but also appeals to non-Muslim customers who prefer ethical banking aligned with Shariah principles.

Earlier this year, Absa Bank launched La Riba Timiza, Kenya’s first fully mobile Shariah-compliant banking platform, as well as the Absa La Riba Card.

Absa Bank Kenya, listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, has 87 branches, 208 ATMs, and a presence in 38 counties. The bank continues to offer innovative financial solutions while promoting financial inclusion across the country.
