Govt Appoints Radio Africa Boss Patrick Quarcoo to New Council

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Wednesday, February 17 inaugurated the Kenya End Malaria Council and Fund, with Radio Africa Group CEO Patrick Quarcoo among appointees to the council.

The inauguration of the council set in motion their three-year term to reinforce advocacy, action, accountability and resource mobilization efforts in Kenya’s fight against Malaria at national, regional and county levels.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, Chairman of the Africa Leaders Malaria Alliance, had directed the Health Ministry to establish the council prompting the appointment by CS Kagwe.

Its members are senior leaders drawn from all sectors to champion the “Zero Malaria Starts with Me!” campaign and to remove barriers limiting the implementation of the Kenya Malaria Strategy.

The council will be chaired by Christopher Getonga with Dr Willis Akhwale serving as the Council Secretary.

“I will do all within my powers to raise resources towards the control efforts in Kenya from all sectors of the economy,” Getonga said in his acceptance speech.

“I will also provide the necessary leadership towards ensuring the local manufacturing of malaria control commodities like bed nets and medicines to ensure we sustain our economy,” he added.

Other members include Kisumu county First Lady Dorothy Nyong’o, Beatrice Maingi, Eva Muthuri, Issac Maluki, Matilu Mwau, Jacinta Wasike and Joyce Momanyi.

The CS disclosed that the council is the Fifth to be launched in Africa after Eswatini, Uganda, Zambia and Mozambique.

He also highlighted the need for the provision of  Malaria supplies stating, “By promoting local manufacturing, we shall reduce reliance on foreign manufactured malaria supplies, ensure economic development as well as easy access and timely delivery of these essential commodities to the populations at risk of malaria.”
