MP Dies in Kisumu Hospital

Bonchari constituency Member of parliament John Oroo Oiyoka passed away on Monday , February 15 at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. He suffered from a mild stroke last year and has since then been in and out of the hospital.

He is the fifth politician to pass away in a span of three months after MPs James Lusweti (Kabuchai), Justus Murunga (Matungu), and Senators Boniface Kabaka (Machakos) and Yusuf Haji (Garissa).

The late Oroo was elected to parliament in 2013, serving for six months before losing his seat to Zebedeo Opore in a by-election after Opore moved to court challenging Oroo’s win.

Backed and sponsored by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2017 general election, Oroo claimed the Bonchari constituency seat.

He passed away an accomplished educator having been a retired teacher and education official, serving in the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Research and Technology.

President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogised the Bonchari MP, describing him as a determined leader who always sought and worked for the improvement of his constituents through education.

“It is a pity that death has robbed us of a determined and progressive grassroots leader who used his long experience as a teacher and administrator to develop his constituents through education.

“Hon Oyioka’s love for education is demonstrated in his setting up of a private teachers college to serve his community after his retirement from public service. That was a selfless leader who knew and appreciated the transformative value of empowering the youth through education,” expressed the President.

The Head of State prayed to God to give the family, relatives, friends and the residents of Bonchari the fortitude and strength to bear the loss of their leader.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi mourned Oyioka as an active member of the Departmental Committee on Education, Research, and Technology remembered for his advocacy towards improved quality of education in the country.

Kisii County Governor James Ongwae expressed his sadness at the passing away of the MP  “My sincere condolences, thoughts, and prayers and that of entire Kisii County goes out to the family, relatives, and friends of mheshimiwa,” Ongwae said.
