President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, November 25 spoke for the first time about quitting Twitter.
Uhuru’s official Facebook and Twitter profiles were deactivated in March 2019 raising various questions.
At the time, media reports linked the move to a post in which the President vowed to crack down on corrupt officials in his government, at a time when Deputy President William Ruto had claimed the war against corruption was being politicized to puncture his 2022 Presidential ambitions.
Uhuru’s Chief of Staff, Nzioka Waita, claimed that the handles were deactivated in response to a case of unauthorized access to the President’s official accounts.
Speaking at the launch of a signature drive for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, however, Uhuru revealed that he left Twitter after experiencing an endless barrage of abuse directed towards him.

He left the audience laughing when he stated that he would rather talk to his wife, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.

“I left Twitter because I saw it’s useless, there it’s nothing but insults.
“You sit there losing sleep, looking at what people have said, even calling people to ask if they have seen what someone has said about you. I would rather sleep and talk to my wife, wake up and work,” he stated.
Waita had claimed that the accounts would be reinstated once action was taken over the issue of unauthorized access.
The President’s comments, however, suggested that he had no intention of returning to social media.
Uhuru used the occasion to drum up support for the BBI, a product of his March 9, 2018 handshake with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.
The launch of the signature collection drive sets the stage for a referendum on various proposals contained in the report.
It also closes the door on a proposal for consensus to be found on various contentious issues before the report is adopted.
DP William Ruto and his allies were the biggest proponents of a non-contested referendum, stating that they wanted various issues addressed without pitting Kenyans against each other.
The Deputy President was not present at the launch of the signature collection drive.
