Two Standard journalists, driver attacked while on duty

Two Standard Group journalists and their driver were on Monday injured and their vehicle destroyed after they were attacked at St Stephen’s Girls Secondary School in Machakos while on assignment.

Carolyne Bii (KTN News reporter), Boniface Magana (cameraman) and Immaculate Joseph (a driver) had visited the school to probe reports of a missing person when the school Principal Charles Kioko allegedly incited the students to instigate the attack.

The journalists and the driver were pelted with stones school is located a kilometer from Maanzoni Lodge.

The attack has been condemned by the Media Council of Kenya and on social media amid demands for action from authorities.

According to a statement by MCK, the principal is said to have declined to be interviewed over the reports one of his students was missing before inciting the students.

“While it is within the right of the school leadership to decline media interviews, it is against the law for anyone to incite and attack journalists who were in their line of duty. The Council has advised the journalists to report the matter to the nearest police station. Subsequently, we urge the police to expedite investigations into the unfortunate incident and bring the culprits to book,” MCK CEO David Omwoyo said.
