How stocks performed at the NSE last week

Last week, weekly trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) dropped to a total turnover of Ksh1.8 billion having posted Ksh2.27 billion the previous week.

Volumes also dipped, with the shares transacted at the bourse tumbling from 71.8 million shares as against the previous week’s 65 million.

Investor wealth at the bourse also declined over the course of last week, with market captalisation moving downwards from Ksh2.396 trillion to end last week at Ksh2.293 trillion.

The Bond Market however bucked the slumping trend and registered improved activity. Bonds worth Ksh10.5 billion were transacted compared to Ksh9.7 billion posted the previous week.

NSE Sectors

In the Banking Sector, shares worth Ksh966 million were transacted over the course of the week. The banks’ transacted stocks accounted for 51.65% of the week’s traded value.

Equity Group actively moved 12.6 million shares valued at Ksh515 million. The most valuable bank at the bourse transacted at between Ksh38.50 and Ksh42. over the week.

KCB Group closed the week 1.94% lower to Ksh40.50 having moved six million shares valued at Ksh252 million.

Co-operative Bank moved four million shares worth Ksh60 million and closed the week at Ksh12.50.

The Commercial & Services Sector had shares worth Ksh40.5 million transacted which accounted for 2.17% of the week’s traded value.

Scangroup slipped 6.58% to close the week at Ksh17.05 with shares worth Ksh34.6 million transacted.

The Construction & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh90.5 million transacted which accounted for 4.84% of the week’s traded value.

Bamburi Cement was the most actively traded counter in this sector during the week with 762,000 shares valued at Ksh90 million at between Ksh118 and Ksh124.

The Manufacturing & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh160 million transacted which represented 8.56% of the week’s traded value.

E.A Breweries saw 660,000 shares valued at Ksh140 million changing hands at between Ksh205 and Ksh220.

British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya recorded a 3.92% gain to close the week at Ksh530 with shares worth Ksh18 million realized.

In the Telecommunication Sector, Safaricom was the day’s main feature with 19 million shares valued at Ksh545 million at between Ksh27.20 and Ksh29.50.

This represented 29.17% of the week’s traded value.
