Community Rugby Association (COMRAS) has received kits sponsorship from Minet Kenya. The support has provided the Nationwide rugby club with kits for the new season.
Established in 2007, COMRAS’ main initiative is to enable young teens from disadvantaged communities who are passionate about playing rugby to join the sport. Since 2007, COMRAS has grown and now has five clubs with under 10’s, 12’s, 14’s and 16’s squads. The five teams meet every last Sunday of each month to compete in tournaments dubbed Community Rugby Association (CRA) Tournaments. The clubs under COMRAS are located all over Nairobi in Runda, Arise in Racecourse, Embubul, Ngong and Matasia.
“Youth empowerment is at the heart of Minet’s business. While we conduct our business, we are always looking into ways of being purposeful to the communities that we serve. Supporting community rugby development is one way of ensuring that the youth are actively engaged and occupied in relevant activities that impact them positively.” CEO for Minet Kenya, Sammy Muthui said at the event.
Receiving the sponsorship, Vice Chairman for Rugby Patrons Society Aggrey Chabeda said the sponsorship was a great boost for the team as it will go a long way in boosting rugby development in the country and enthusiasm of young the players.
“COMRAS has supported grassroots rugby activities that form a platform for boys and girls, from age 10 through to 18 to learn and hone their rugby skills for 11 years. The project has incubated and developed rugby talent for the future while inculcating important life skills to the kids,” Chabeda added.
“We have formed a senior team for both boys and girls and they now play in the nationwide rugby league. Two of the girls participated in the just concluded Singapore Sevens,” Chabeda said.
In the past Community, Patrons have actively helped players find rugby clubs in their localities to provide them with quality experiences once they get to a competitive age professionally. This has seen COMRAS collaborate with Nondescripts RFC in helping players access training facilities to improve their rugby skills and fitness needed for the game
The chairperson for Nondescripts Limited, Andew Jackson concluded: “We are providing financial support, access to our facilities and coaches for COMRAS players as part for our commitment to the wider rugby community to be able to shape the future of the young players.”

COMRAS finished fourth in the Nationwide League, Nairobi region, last season falling short of the title and promotion to Makueni, Swara and Northern Suburbs who were third, second and first respectively.
