Kakamega Homeboyz have sacked coach Paul Nkata and his entire technical bench over allegations of match fixing with veteran footballer Allan Wanga taking over immediately as interim coach.
According to club owner Cleophas Shimanyula, Wanga will take over the club as interim coach. He has also confirmed that the sacking is due to match fixing allegations.
“I can confirm that we have suspended the entire technical bench for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal as we have concrete evidence on their involvement. They have since recorded statements to the police but we currently don’t have any information on their whereabouts,” Shimanyula said.
Nkata has been allegedly accussed of fixing matches against Sony Sugar and Mathare United. They lost both matches with defender Moses Chikati scoring an own goal in the Sony Sugar match.
Homeboyz are currently 13th in the Kenya Premier League with a run of poor results that may have contributed to Nkata’s ouster. They last won against KCB on December 12, which is one of their two victories this season out of 9 matches.
Wanga will have a rather hard first day in office as the team prepares to face second placed and unbeaten Bandari on Wednesday. Bandari are also finalists of the Sportpesa Super Cup having lost to Kariobangi Sharks via penalties during the weekend.
Reacting to the news, Football Kenya Limited President Nick Mwendwa tweeted: “Allegedly a coach caught using his players for match fixing. New frontier in Kenyan football! We have to up our game now in ensuring we deal with it. Eish!”
