National Land Comission (NLC) chairperson Mohammed Swazuri has revealed that 20 out of 26 acres of Mama Ngina Drive has been grabbed.

Speaking on Thursday, Swazuri alleged that 20 acres of the land has been grabbed by 13 tycoons two days after President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the commission to repossess all public land grabbed by cartels in Mombasa.

President Kenyatta made the remarks while launching the Ksh460 million waterfront project on January 8. The launch of the waterfront is part of the larger plan to beautify Mombasa and make it a world class city and a renown tourist destination in line with Vision 2030.

“I want NLC and Ministry of Land to ensure that when we return here to officially launch the project in June after construction, the public land should have been repossessed and reverted to public use,” said President Kenyatta.

Swazuri fired a warning to the grabbers saying that the commission will recover all the land in three months.

“We are giving those people claiming to own the parcel of land time to return it. After three months, we would have repossessed all of it,” said Mr Swazuri when he visited the site on Thursday.

Part of the regeneration of Mombasa City includes setting up a Swahili cultural centre, modern market and an amphitheater.
