One month after meeting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s confidant David Murathe and former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi on Monday met Central Kenya leaders to drum up support for his 2022 State House bid even as speculation that he is hunting for a running mate from the bastion remains a major talking point for political observers.
Mudavadi on Monday met with a section of elected leaders and poll losers in the last general election from the region, a meeting that he described as ‘extremely important’ that cannot be ignored.
Former Kiambu Senator Kembi Gitura as well as former Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe were among the group of leaders present at the meeting.
Speaking after the meeting, Mudavadi said that the meeting largely revolved around referundum proposals that have been supported by leaders of all major political formations in the country.
“In the meeting we deliberated at length about consensus building and the possible change in the constitution. This meeting was extremely important, said Mudavadi.
Former Senator Kagwe echoed the popular opinion that the country needs a constitution that is responsive and reflective of the needs of Kenyans after taking stock with the Uhuru Presidency.

This comes after President Kenyatta hinted at a referendum to change the current pure presidential system government structure he described as a ‘time bomb’ during his recent visit to Nyanza Region.
The talk about Musalia preferring a running mate from Central Kenya is interesting because before the 2013 presidential elections, Uhuru backed Mudavadi for the country’s top job before his party The National Alliance (TNA) piled enough pressure on him to change his mind and blame ‘demons’ for his earlier declaration.
On November 10, 2018 Mudavadi also held late night talks with Murathe which reportedly lasted more than seven hours.
Murathe who is the Jubilee Party Vice Chairperson was the first person in the president’s camp to give a glimpse into how President Kenyatta would handle corruption once he got re-elected and his demeanor.

“I am very sorry for serial looters after Uhuru gets re-elected. I believe his agenda will circle around legacy issues which will be law, order, discipline and the fight against corruption. They will see his true colours and the guy will stop at nothing to rid the country off graft. That you can take to the bank,” said Murathe in an interview with KTN in June 2017.
Mudavadi has already voiced his support for the war against corruption and the handshake saying the two are a step in the right direction for the country.
So far Mudavadi has read from the same script as the president.
