Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) boss Seth Panyako was on Monday October 29 arrested for marshaling nurses at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to participate in a protest.
Panyako was taken into custody following a report by the hospital’s security team to the police.
“It doesn’t make any sense for Panyako to come here and invite nurses to a strike because he is not allowed to do that and in any case he is an outsider who does not work here.” said Manase Mukhwana the hospital’s head of security.
A number of the nurses who participated in the protest were also arrested and detained at the police post inside the referral hospital.
The arrest of the union leader comes one week after a nurse was strangled by a mother whose son died at the hospital on October 13, 2018.

Panyako’s call for a strike was catalysesd by concerns by the nurses who are questioning their safety at the facility following the assault of their colleague on October 14, 2018.
Claims are also emerging from the hospital that the assaulted nurse was asked to pay for her treatment despite being attacked while she was discharging her duties at the hospital.
