Nine Kenyan students who had travelled to China courtesy of the Huawei Seeds for the Future initiative graduated on October 12 from a two week training program at the Huawei University alongside fellow counterparts from Africa, South America and Europe.
The giant networking telecommunications company said the Kenyan learners together with students from Senegal, Bolivia and Czech Republic received training on Chinese culture, language and ICT. The training was held at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China.
Drawn from six local public universities in Kenya, the nine in the graduating cohort are Beatrice Wangui, Kelvin Lotengan, Dennis Kimutai, Eunia Bosire, Emily Muraguri, Rahab Ndirangu, Cyrus Muchogo, Elijah Wambua and Edwin Rimu.
“China is considered as a land of wisdom and innovations. Beautiful landscapes and diverse cultures make the country splendid and charming, pawing in the modern age by its high tech industry and we appreciate the opportunity given to learn from the experts in the industry,” said Emily Muraguri, one of the students from JKUAT.
Part of the training encompassed familiarity with the various technologies that Huawei has developed for mobile such as 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and the the 5G network that is currently in its developmental stages.
The students also got a chance to learn about Cloud computing and the various opportunities it presents in the path to a truly globalized and interconnected world where internet connectivity is key.

The Huawei Seeds for Future was initiated in 2008 by the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world. The program seeks to develop local ICT talent and promote a greater understanding of and interest in the telecommunications sector.
In Kenya, the program has been running since 2014 in conjunction with the ICT Ministry through the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA). It targets students from local universities with the aim of framing the country’s ICT architecture.
This year’s finalists were drawn from the University of Nairobi (UON), University of Embu, Moi University, Chuka Univesity, Technical University of Kenya and JKUAT
