Uganda opposition MP and popular afro-pop musician Bobi Wine labelled US rapper Kanye West “immoral” for meeting President Yoweri Museveni and exchanging gifts with the head of state at the Uganda State House on October 15.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, Wine, said West should not have been using his image “just to rub shoulders with the president” after the American rapper and his wife, reality TV star Kim Kardashian, visited President Museveni..

Wine, who’s real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said of Kanye, “He is hobnobbing with a president who has been in power now for 32 years and restricts any freedom, a country where opposition activists are tortured and imprisoned.”

West is in Uganda to shoot a video in a game park where the rapper is recording his ninth album in a purpose-built tent. His visit to the State House saw West and Kardashian present the 74-year old President Museveni a pair of Yeezy Boost trainers signed by the superstar couple.

President Museveni in turn reciprocated with a signed copy of his book, Sowing the Mustard Seed: The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy in Uganda. According to BBC Africa, the Uganda President gave West a Ugandan name ‘Kanyesige’ which means ‘I trust’.

President Museveni posted on his Twitter account that he had held fruitful discussions with Kanye and Kim.

Wine’s opposition to President Museveni acquired worldwide fame after he was detained by the Ugandan authorities only to re-appear having been badly injured. The opposition lawmaker was charged with treason in late August alongside 34 co-accused persons, alleged to have stoned President Museveni’s convoy.

The 35 accused persons have denied the treason charges and the case has been moved to December, with the State saying it required more time to conduct investigations.

Wine was treated in the US following his re-appearance with his injuries being suspected to have been inflicted due to torture while he was in detention.

His return to Uganda in September was met with a massive security clampdown in the country’s capital, Kampala.

The afro-pop star also recently took to social media to blame the Uganda Police for taking him in circles over the clearance of a concert Wine is scheduled to hold on October 20.

Wine said his team had been informed that he was to appear in person on October 15, leading to him cutting short a trip to Kenya so as to return to Uganda. The lawmaker however claims that the authorities are trying to sabotage his efforts of hosting the concert.

“We have done everything required of us by law but it is apparent that the people in authority are doing everything possible to frustrate the concert… But I advise those in authority to desist from these provocations. I am a Ugandan artiste with a legitimate right to stage a concert,” he posted on Facebook.
