The construction of Usenge Pier in Bondo, Siaya County, is expected to improve transport, fish handling and commercial activity around Lake Victoria, with the government positioning the facility as a regional hub for passenger and cargo movement.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the project is part of efforts to revive economic activity along the lakefront through investments in maritime infrastructure.

Construction began after President William Ruto presided over the groundbreaking ceremony in March 2026. The project is being spearheaded by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), with Kenya Shipyards Limited responsible for implementation.

The development is being undertaken in two phases. The first phase includes earthworks, construction of a perimeter wall, gate and guard house, landscaping, and a jetty measuring 25 metres wide and 200 metres long.

The completed facility will also include an administration block, security installations and cold-storage units intended to reduce post-harvest losses among fish traders.

According to Omollo, the pier is expected to serve as a commercial satellite port linking several landing sites, including Luanda K’otieno, Mbita, Homa Bay, Sena and Kisumu.

Water buses and ferry services are also planned to facilitate the movement of passengers and goods across the lake. The services are expected to cut travel time to Kisumu by approximately 30 minutes compared with road transport.

The project comes amid efforts to expand the use of Lake Victoria for trade and transportation, particularly for communities that depend on fishing and related businesses for their livelihoods.

Omollo said marine safety and security would be important as activity on the lake increases, noting that coordination involving the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration would support the protection of passengers, traders and infrastructure.

The pier’s impact will depend on the completion of construction, the introduction of the planned transport services and the extent to which fish traders and other businesses can access the facility.
