Historic Kamukunji Grounds Gets A Facelift

The historic Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi, regarded as an important site in Kenya’s journey towards multiparty democracy, has been transformed into a modern public recreational and community facility under the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project.

According to State Department for Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the restoration of the grounds is intended to preserve the site’s historical significance while creating a space that serves the needs of the community.

Omollo said history plays an important role in shaping the future by preserving the lessons, struggles and aspirations that define a nation.

He noted that Kamukunji Historical Grounds holds particular significance in Kenya’s democratic journey as the birthplace of the 1990 Saba Saba movement, which contributed to the country’s transition towards multiparty democracy and wider civil liberties.

“As we stride on towards our future, Beyond Vision 2030, the restoration of this landmark ensures that the memories that shaped the nation remain part of the conversations shaping its tomorrow,” Omollo said.

The redevelopment has turned the once historic grounds into a multipurpose public space combining heritage, recreation, environmental restoration and community activities.

The upgraded facility now includes an 11-a-side football pitch, seven-a-side and multipurpose fields, basketball courts and a boxing ring.

Children have also been catered for through dedicated play areas, while improved walkways and sanitation facilities are expected to make the grounds safer and more accessible to the public.

The facility also features a mental health corner, adding a social and wellbeing component to the recreational space.

Beyond sporting facilities, the project has incorporated spaces aimed at education, culture and community interaction.

A resource centre comprising a library, social hall and digital museum has been established at the grounds, providing facilities for learning and preserving the site’s historical heritage.

The upgraded complex also includes an indoor gym and changing rooms.

An amphitheatre forms part of the outdoor facilities and is equipped with an outdoor gym, gazebos and a tree nursery, further expanding the space’s recreational and environmental functions.

Omollo said the transformation represents more than an upgrade of a sporting facility, noting that the project brings together Kenya’s democratic heritage, environmental restoration and community development.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, he said, continues to support the gains made through local administration and community engagement.

The department is working with communities to encourage them to take ownership of the renewed facility and ensure that it is properly safeguarded.

The government views the restored grounds as both a living monument to Kenya’s democratic history and a shared public asset that can serve future generations.

The redevelopment therefore seeks to preserve the memory of the events associated with Kamukunji while giving residents a modern space for sports, recreation, learning, social interaction and community activities.
