Toyota has officially entered Kenya’s fully electric vehicle market with the launch of the Toyota bZ4X, marking a major shift for one of the country’s most trusted automotive brands as demand for cleaner transport continues to grow.

The vehicle was unveiled in Nairobi by CFAO Mobility Kenya, Toyota’s official distributor in the country, becoming the first fully electric Toyota SUV available in the local market. The launch comes at a time when Kenya is witnessing increased interest in electric mobility, driven by rising fuel costs, environmental concerns and expanding charging infrastructure.

For decades, Toyota has dominated Kenya’s roads with popular models such as the Corolla, Prado, Hilux and Land Cruiser. The arrival of the bZ4X signals the company’s entry into a market that has largely been led by newer electric vehicle brands and startups.

Announcing the launch, Toyota said the new model represents the future of mobility and reflects the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions through cleaner technologies.

The bZ4X is part of Toyota’s global “Beyond Zero” strategy, which focuses on developing low-emission and zero-emission vehicles while maintaining the reliability and durability the brand is known for.

“The bZ4X represents the next chapter in mobility. With its zero-emissions, impressive range and standard-setting safety features, this innovative SUV ensures our customers don’t have to choose between cutting-edge electric performance and trusted, durable engineering,” CFAO Mobility Kenya Managing Director Arvinder Reel said.

The electric SUV is powered by a 73.1 kWh lithium-ion battery and delivers up to 516 kilometres of driving range on a single charge, depending on road and driving conditions. The all-wheel-drive version produces 215 horsepower and 337 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just over five seconds. The vehicle uses a single-speed eAxle transmission designed to provide smooth and quiet performance.

Toyota says charging has been designed to fit everyday use. Using a 150 kW DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes. The company is also offering an eight-year or 120,000-kilometre battery warranty, a move aimed at addressing concerns many buyers still have about battery life and replacement costs.

The SUV is built on Toyota’s dedicated e-TNGA electric vehicle platform, which places the battery beneath the floor. This lowers the vehicle’s centre of gravity, improves handling and creates more cabin space for passengers.

Measuring 4.69 metres long and riding on 20-inch alloy wheels, the bZ4X has a ground clearance of 213 millimetres, making it suitable for both city driving and rougher roads common across many parts of Kenya. It also features a 500 mm wading depth, Multi-Terrain Select, X-Mode and Downhill Assist Control, features aimed at giving drivers confidence on challenging surfaces.

Inside, the SUV features a spacious cabin with synthetic leather seats, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The vehicle also comes with Toyota Safety Sense, a package that includes pre-collision warning systems, lane assistance technology, multiple airbags and electronic stability control.

One of Toyota’s biggest advantages in the local market is its established support network. CFAO Mobility Kenya operates one of the country’s largest dealership and service networks, with dozens of branches and service centres across Kenya. This is expected to give potential buyers confidence, particularly at a time when concerns about servicing and maintaining electric vehicles remain common.

The launch of the bZ4X highlights how Kenya’s automotive industry is gradually embracing electric mobility. While electric motorcycles and three-wheelers currently account for the majority of EV adoption, passenger electric vehicles are becoming increasingly visible in major urban centres such as Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

As charging infrastructure expands and more global manufacturers introduce electric models into the market, the arrival of Toyota’s first fully electric SUV could help accelerate the transition to cleaner transport and bring electric vehicles closer to mainstream Kenyan motorists.
