The government has highlighted the strategic importance of the Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet Road, saying the 122-kilometre highway is expected to transform trade, ease transport costs and improve connectivity across three counties in the country’s sugar-growing belt.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the corridor, designated as Road C674, links Kisumu, Nandi and Kericho counties and is a key infrastructure project aimed at strengthening regional economic integration.

According to the PS, the project is being implemented under the supervision of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and is designed to support both industrial and commercial transport activities across Western Kenya.

“The Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet Road (C674) is a transformative 122-kilometre corridor linking Kisumu, Nandi and Kericho counties, reinforcing regional connectivity across the Western Kenya sugar belt,” Omollo said.

The road has been engineered to dense bitumen macadam standards capable of handling heavy commercial traffic, particularly vehicles serving major sugar processing factories in the region, including Miwani, Chemelil and Muhoroni.

Omollo noted that the corridor’s industrial logistics role is expected to lower transport costs and improve efficiency in the movement of sugarcane, refined sugar and other related products.

The project is also expected to ease pressure on existing transport networks by providing an alternative route for long-distance trucks travelling between Nairobi and Western Kenya.

According to the Interior PS, the highway has been designed to function as a major bypass that will divert heavy commercial vehicles away from Ahero and significantly reduce congestion in Kisumu City.

The new route is also expected to address traffic bottlenecks along alternative corridors, including the Awasi route, resulting in shorter travel times, lower fuel consumption and reduced vehicle maintenance costs.

Beyond its economic benefits, Omollo said government agencies are working together to ensure the smooth implementation and safe operation of the road.

He noted that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting inter-agency coordination efforts aimed at securing construction works and enforcing traffic management measures along the corridor.

The project forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at improving road connectivity, supporting industrial growth and enhancing the movement of goods and people across key economic zones.
