An outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP has been arrested over alleged hate speech and is likely to be taken to court to face charges, as crackdown on politicians making inflamatory remarks intesifies ahead of the August 8th elections.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed was seized by police officers on Friday, accusing him of hate speech and incitement to violence.

He was taken to Homa Bay Police Station, where he is recording a statement.

Police sources told The Nation that the MP would be taken to court today to answer to the charges.

Police are yet to reveal the specifics of what Mr Mohamed uttered and where.

But Homa Bay Criminal Investigations chief Joseph Tuksho said the MP would be arraigned in court immediately.

The arrest comes days after President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed stern action against politicians inciting Kenyans to violence.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has also put on notice leaders fanning disharmony in the country.
