The International Foundation Year (IFY) is a preparatory course offered by Kenya’s IUPC College in conjunction with the Northern Consortium of UK Universities (NCUK). It is designed for students aiming to gain admission to leading universities worldwide, including the University of Birmingham, the University of Bristol, Stanford University, the University of Oxford, the University of Manchester, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Much like A-Levels, a popular subject-based qualification for university entry, IFY equips students with essential skills for university life.

However, despite their similarities in purpose, IFY and A-Levels serve distinct functions and have unique features.

What you need to know about International Foundation Year in Kenya

University Foundation Program

The International Foundation Year (IFY) is a university foundation program designed to provide students with the academic, language, practical skills, and cultural knowledge needed for success at any global university.

According to the Northern Consortium of UK Universities (NCUK), the organisation behind IFY, the program accelerates students’ journeys to undergraduate degrees at universities worldwide by thoroughly preparing them for first-year university entry.

“By studying the International Foundation Year, you will develop your subject knowledge, study skills, and English language competency, allowing you to choose from thousands of degree courses across 60+ leading universities in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, and more,” says NCUK.

NCUK further explains that universities globally and UK ENIC (European Network of Information Centres) formally recognise the NCUK International Foundation Year as comparable to qualifications such as GCE A Level, Australian high school (SSCE), American high school (AP), and the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE).

Since its establishment in 1987, NCUK has partnered with leading universities worldwide to provide international students with guaranteed access to higher education institutions through the IFY program and to support their success once enrolled.

“Tailored specifically for international students, the International Foundation Year offers a transformative educational experience. It builds confidence for thriving in international universities by providing a solid foundation in English language proficiency and essential academic skills critical for higher education,” the organisation highlights.

Students who complete the NCUK IFY program are guaranteed a place at one of NCUK’s university partners, including Aston University, the University of Birmingham, the University of Bradford, the University of Bristol, the University of Exeter, and the University of Leeds in the UK, as well as institutions in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, France, and more.

Well, and what are the requirements for doing IFY in Kenya?

Since IFY graduates have a guaranteed progression to undergraduate degree programs abroad, Kenyan applicants need to have completed their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or the IGCSE from international schools to apply and take the tests.

For KCSE holders, a minimum mean grade is not required; however, grades of C or above in three core subjects are needed, with an emphasis on English and Mathematics.

A-Levels and International Baccalaureate (IB) students may also apply if they have at least one E grade from a UK A-Level board or a minimum of 22 points in the IB.

Please note that IFY is not a bridging course but an initial year of study for students aiming to progress into an undergraduate degree.

The best-known NCUK-accredited institution offering the International Foundation Year in Kenya is International University Pathways College (IUPC) in Lavington, Nairobi.

“Our International Foundation Year program ensures high academic standards and provides students with the skills, knowledge, and intellectual curiosity required for success at any global university,” says IUPC on its website.

At IUPC, students take a range of subject-specific coursework, study skills, and English language modules to fully prepare for undergraduate study abroad. With fully integrated classes and experienced instructors, the program enables students to engage with domestic and international peers, benefiting from a high-quality educational experience.

When you complete the programme, you become eligible for many of the undergraduate programmes offered through the institution’s partnership with NCUK to universities like Aston, Alberta, Liverpool, South Australia and Auckland. It is also widely accepted for undergraduate entry at other universities, including most in the US and many in other countries as well.

Please note that all universities have their own application criteria, and you should check with each university for their policies and application deadlines. Contact IUPC at +254 788 175518 for guidance.

You forgot differences between IFY and A-Levels…

Oh, yes. Although both IFY and A-Levels prepare students for university admission, key differences exist between the two programs:

  1. Duration and cost: IFY typically lasts 9 to 12 months and costs around Ksh800,000 to Ksh1 million, while A-Levels require approximately two years and cost up to Ksh2 million.
  2. Assessment methods: IFY focuses on preparing students for university-style exams, whereas A-Levels require comprehensive assessments in specific subjects.
  3. Global recognition and university Readiness: IFY is widely accepted at universities across the UK, Canada, Australia, and more, offering a pathway for international students. A-Levels, often called the “Gold Standard,” are more specialised, preparing students for particular subjects, mostly in UK universities.
  4. English Proficiency Requirements: IFY graduates often meet the English proficiency requirements for international universities, making IELTS tests unnecessary for application. Conversely, A-Level graduates may still need additional English certifications for certain universities.

In summary, IFY and A-Levels both lead to excellent educational opportunities, but IFY provides a more affordable, faster path to global universities, making it ideal for students seeking a well-rounded foundation in academic and language skills before starting their university journey. From confirming your career goals to making sure you’re on the course that’s right for you, there are so many benefits to studying a foundation year.
