The journalism community in Kenya is mourning the loss of KTN reporter Shadrack Mitty, a seasoned journalist who dedicated nearly a decade of his career to The Standard Group. Mitty has left an indelible mark in media reporting, according to tributes, particularly in the realm of education.

Mitty’s untimely demise while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital has left his colleagues, friends and the entire industry in shock, as they remember his passion, dedication and professionalism in journalism, not so long after the deaths of three other media personalities.

During his tenure at The Standard Group, Mitty’s contribution as a reporter in the broadcast section of KTN was noticeable, with a special focus on education reporting. His insightful coverage of significant events such as the transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) from the 8-4-4 system, as well as his diligent reporting on national examinations like KCSE and KCPE, showcased his commitment to providing informative and impactful stories to the public.

Mitty’s reporting also extended to international educational matters, underscoring his broad scope and thorough approach to journalism. Colleagues and friends remember Mitty as a focused, composed, and dedicated journalist, especially known for his passion for education stories.

Mitty is the fourth prominent journalist to die this year.  His death comes at a time the media industry is still coming to terms with the untimely deaths of TV journalist Rita Tinina, business writer Washington Akumu and news anchor Michael Oyier.

Mr Kizito Namulanda, the Broadcast and Innovation Editor at Standard Group, fondly recalled Mitty’s unwavering dedication and emphasized his unique ability to bring depth and insight to his reporting. The outpouring of condolences and heartfelt messages from fellow journalists, industry professionals, and friends attest to the respect and admiration Mitty garnered throughout his career.

Mr Philip Etale, ODM spokesman, highlighted Mitty’s admirable work ethic, describing him as a journalist who loved his job, was dedicated to his craft, and always strove for a thorough understanding of the stories he covered. Mr Etale’s tribute to Mitty as a diligent and inquisitive reporter reflects the profound impact Mitty had on his peers and the audiences he served.

As the journalism industry mourns the loss of Shadrack Mitty, his legacy as a committed education reporter, a trusted colleague, and a passionate storyteller lives on. Mitty’s contributions to media reporting and his dedication to informing the public through insightful storytelling will be remembered and cherished, underscoring the lasting impact he made in the field of journalism and the hearts of those who knew and worked alongside him.
