The interior of a building in the Mathare North area of Nairobi City caved in Tuesday, and several people are feared trapped beneath its rubble.

Among the first responders to the emergency was the Kenya Red Cross, who are currently leading the rescue efforts at the site.

It announced the collapse via X after it had dug four people out of the building debris, saying three had been rushed to a nearby health facility for urgent medical attention as the other one was in stable condition with minor injuries.

“Four people have been rescued after being trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building that was under demolition in Area 1, Mathare North, thanks to a multi-agency rescue team,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

At the time of reporting, ambulances were seen at the scene, but the number of people still trapped under the rubble is not known.

As per the photos circulating on the internet, the emergency crews will need special tools to claw through the debris and pull the victims to safety and on time.

It is not clear what caused the collapse, but reports say that the trapped persons had gone to that partially demolished building to look for scrap metals to sell.
