Former Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has died at 71.
Magoha, according to family, died at the Nairobi Hospital where he had been rushed after falling ill. He died of cardiac arrest.
“Yes it is true. He is no more,” his wife Dr Barbra Magoha told the Nation.
Prof Magoha leaves behind his wife Dr Magoha and son Dr Michael Magoha.
The Nairobi hospital CEO James Nyamongo in a statement confirmed his death.
“It is with great regret that we announce the sudden and untimely demise of Professor George Magoha this evening at The Nairobi Hospital,” The Nairobi Hospital CEO James Nyamongo said in a statement.
“Magoha collapsed at home and was rushed to the Nairobi Hospital A and E. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.”
His death comes a few days after he lost his brother Prof Richard Alex Nyabera Magoha.
The brother’s burial was set for this Saturday.
President William Ruto termed Prof Magoha a towering giant of our time, a great man who stood tall in the academy, where he excelled in learning, teaching and research, as well as in administration.
“He led robust turnaround interventions at the University of Nairobi and the Kenya National Examinations Council. Throughout his tenure (as CS), he evinced a commitment to high standards in the public service and an uncompromising integrity,” President Ruto said in a statement.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga termed Magoha a a transformational leader, illustrious scholar, dedicated public servant, and distinguished medical doctor who left an indelible mark on our country’s education system.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Prof. George Magoha, a transformational leader, illustrious scholar, dedicated public servant, and distinguished medical doctor who left an indelible mark on our country’s education system. We will remember him for his incredible intellect, wit, and ability to inspire and challenge us to do our best. My condolences go out to his family and colleagues. May he Rest In Eternal Peace,” Raila wrote.
