A tweet claiming a donkey Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii rode during elections campaigns díed mysteriously is false.

Mr Bii is seen riding a horse in a video attached to the tweet shared on 1st December 2022. An image of a black horse lying on the ground is also attached to the tweet. The video and photo have a caption that says, “The Donkey which Governor Jonathan Bii rode díed under mysterious circumstances.”

The video in question was published on Standard Digital’s Facebook page on 6th June 2022 and shows Governor Bii, then a gubernatorial candidate, riding a brown horse draped in United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party colours after receiving Independent Electoral And Boundaries Commission (IEBC) clearance to run in the 9th August general elections.

A cursory observation shows Mr Bii is not riding a donkey as claimed in the tweet, but rather a horse, which has not been reported to have díed mysteriously. Besides, the horse used by Mr Bii is brown in colour, while the one claimed to have díed is black with a white patch on the face.

Business Today conducted a reverse image search, which revealed the image of the black horse has been shared on freepik, an online photo portal. Also, the same picture appears on iStock, an online royalty-free, international micro stock photography provider based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. According to the website, the image was uploaded on 3rd October, 2019.

A similar image was also shared on 4th March 2020 on PHD Veterinary Services’ Twitter account, in a post explaining how to prevent Colic in horses.

The claim that a horse ridden by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii díed mysteriously has been debunked by fact-checking the photo and is thus false.

This fact check was published by Business Today with support from Code for Africa’s PesaCheck and African Fact-Checking Alliance.
