Dr. William Ruto is the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya. He took the oath of office in front of over 60,000 Kenyans who packed the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Tuesday, September 13.

Uhuru Kenyatta handed over the instruments of power including the ceremonial sword.

Also present at the colourful ceremony were delegations from several countries, including 20 African Heads of State, business representatives and diplomats. The US delegation was led by Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Ambassador Meg Whitman.

Rigathi Gachagua, the former Mathira MP, was also sworn in as Deputy President.

All eyes will be on the Ruto-Gachagua duo as they begin their five-year term. Ruto ran on a promise to empower ordinary citizens and Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs).

Speaking over the weekend, Ruto promised to jump into action on the cost of living as a matter of priority. He stated that the government would take immediate action to bring down the cost of fertilizer and the cost of maize flour.

He also vowed to take action on brokers and unscrupulous groups blamed for short-changing farmers.

Ruto had earlier promised affordable government financing for SMEs through the Ksh50 Billion ‘Hustlers’ Fund’. He has also promised to ensure counties receive revenue on time and to implement county charters signed with all 47 counties highlighting priority projects.

Ruto has also promised massive investment in connectivity and the digital economy. He has also committed to ensuring the two-thirds gender rule is implemented.

The President has also promised to uphold the independence of the judiciary and the larger justice system.
