Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) on September 6 impeached Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

A majority 103 MCAs supported the impeachment motion sponsored by Waithaka MCA Anthony Kiragu. Two dissented while two others abstained.

The Nairobi County Assembly seats 122 representatives in total. This means that 84% of MCAs sent Ms. Elachi packing.

The county legislators accused Ms. Elachi of conspiring to defraud the county off Ksh25 million for the purchase of the Official Residence of the Speaker as well as usurping the authority of the County Assembly Board by inviting investigators to probe the conduct of officers of the county assembly.

According to the MCAs, Ms. Elachi did not attend a single board meeting to discuss the conduct of the officers before calling in the investigators. County reps said this was unwarranted and illegal.

The MCAs also fault Elachi for wastage of public resources. They claim that she spent Ksh550,000 during a trip to Dubai where she was allegedly presented with a Honorary Doctorate Degree.

MCAs of the county which holds the nation’s capital city also allege that Elachi blew Ksh550,000 of taxpayer money on a “non existent” leadership summit in Dubai.

Elachi will also not be afforded the chance to defend herself before the committee after the MCAs ammended house procedures in the removal of a speaker which requires the person being impeach to defend themselves.

This comes one day after 101 out of 122 MCAs signed a petition to impeach Elachi over what they claimed to be abuse of office and gross misconduct.
