A total of 386 artists have been selected for the next stage of the East African Breweries Ltd’s Got Skillz?, the competition that will culminate in the design of a new logo for the company listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

All the submissions were by individuals, said EABL Group Corporate Relations Director Eric Kiniti, and 20 of them will now be picked by the judges to proceed to a hackathon scheduled for Saturday, July 20 at Nairobi Garage.

“We shall now have the judges pore over the designs that were submitted. We will then select the 20 best submissions. We are really happy with the response, especially given the time we gave for the submissions, and we look forward to seeing what the entrants have to offer,” said Mr Kiniti.

The competition was open to artists between the ages of 21 and 25 from across the region. There were subsequently 359 submissions from Kenya, 24 from Uganda and three from Tanzania.

Judges will now spend the next few days looking through the submissions, judging them on the interpretation and clarity of the theme to the artist, creativity, originality, the quality of the composition and the overall impression of the art.

The submissions will be judged on their adaptability as a logo and whether it stands out as a complete and outstanding work of art that can be converted into a brand identity with ease.

The panel of judges comprises advertising experts, art, copy and creative directors with decades of experience in the industry and who have participated in the creation of brand designs for big organisations across the region.

At the hackathon, the 20 artists will get guidance from the judges as they improve their submissions to the best possible design and will then make a presentation on how they went about creating their interpretation of the logo.

The judges will then consider the final designs and communicate their decision at a later date.

The winning submission will win a cash prize of Ksh 1 million, while the second and third placed will each receive a cash prize of Ksh 500,000 and Ksh 300,000 respectively.
