BrighterMonday Kenya and National Youth Service collaborate to empower 1,500 NYS Youth towards achieving dignified and fulfilling work. The collaboration seeks to boost youth employability and unlock Kenya’s talent potential as part of the inaugural NYS Career Fair.
Through the initiative recent 1,500 NYS graduates will be connected directly with 20 leading employers aimed at preparing disciplined, skilled, and job-ready youth for dignified and fulfilling work.
In the spirit of International Youth Day, the Career Fair blended soft skills training, tech-enabled job matching, and direct employer engagement. The initiative draws from the proven model of BrighterMonday’s GenKazi program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation’s Young Africa Works strategy, which focuses on inclusive hiring and workforce development.
“By reimagining how job seekers and employers connect, we are setting a precedent for inclusive, technology-driven hiring that enables us to build Kenya’s future workforce – one opportunity at a time,” said Sylvia Mbaabu, Country Programs Lead, BrighterMonday Kenya. “Today, we have seen the promise of youth action translated into tangible career pathways.”

This year’s International Youth Day theme, “Local Youth Action for the SDGs and Beyond,” aligns closely with the BrighterMonday’s and NYS’ objective of translating youth potential into meaningful economic participation. Attendees engaged in career coaching, interactive training sessions, and personalized job search support, all aimed at enhancing job market readiness and long-term career success.
“The NYS, BrighterMonday Kenya, and employers came together today to create a deliberate model that positions young people for the job market. By unlocking the potential of our graduates, we not only meet the needs of industry but also contribute to national development,” said James K. Tembur, Commandant General, National Youth Service.
The event is the first in a series of regional youth engagements that BrighterMonday Kenya will roll out nationwide under the GenKazi program, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. The goal is to bridge Kenya’s skills gap, especially among young women (target 70%), persons with disabilities (10%), and displaced youth (10%), while promoting dignified and fulfilling employment.
The collaboration echoes the UN Secretary-General’s call to recognize young people as “bold innovators, resilient organisers, and essential partners” in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It also highlights the NYS mission to transform and empower disadvantaged youth through paramilitary discipline, skills development, and national service – equipping them with a moral compass and self-regulation to navigate life and making them highly sought-after in the job market.
