Standard Bank Group has announced strategic leadership appointments within its Africa Regions business, underscoring its commitment to continued growth, strengthening its regional franchises, and leveraging the extensive expertise within its organisation. These transitions are effective 1st September, 2025.

Dr Joshua Oigara has been appointed as Regional Chief Executive (RCE) for East Africa. He will continue to serve as Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Kenya, a position he has held since December 2022, while taking on the additional RCE responsibilities. The appointment is subject to regulatory approval.

Having previously held the role of Chief Executive Officer for a regional bank in East Africa, his in-depth knowledge of the East Africa market positions him well to lead the Bank’s ambitions across the region.

Dr Oigara is an industry pioneer who has advanced the region’s growth through transformative leadership. He was instrumental in catalysing digitization in East Africa’s banking sector and partnered with regulators and key industry players to expand financial inclusion across the region through technology driven solutions and enabling policies.

Serving as Chairman of the Kenya Bankers Association Governing Council for two terms, and a current council member, Dr Oigara continues to champion substantial progress towards improved stability, accessibility, inclusivity, and efficiency in the banking sector.

In addition to his contribution to the industry, he has played an advisory role in national and regional platforms and has overseen the delivery of key social and economic projects. Notably, he served as Director of the Vision 2030 Delivery Board, contributing to Kenya’s journey towards becoming an industrialised middle-income nation and was recognized by the Financial Times as one of Africa’s top 25 leaders for his exceptional track record and dedication to transformational leadership.

Patrick Mweheire, who is currently the Regional Chief Executive (RCE) for East Africa and the Chief Executive Officer for Stanbic Kenya Holdings, will be concluding his five-year tenure as RCE on August 31, 2025. He remains a Senior Executive within the Standard Bank Group, and his deep and rich experience will continue to be leveraged within the Group. Patrick will continue to hold the role of Chief Executive of Stanbic Kenya Holdings.

Mweheire has been instrumental in organically growing our East African franchise into being the second most profitable regional bank, while actively driving collaboration amongst the teams and providing executive sponsorship of our multi-national and regional clients.
