Search and rescue operations are underway in Shauri Moyo after a building collapsed in the Blue Estate area of Nairobi on Monday, March 16, 2026, during an attempted demolition exercise.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the structure, located in Kamukunji Sub-County, was among buildings situated along the riparian corridor of the Nairobi River that had been earmarked for removal under the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Project implemented by the Nairobi Rivers Commission.

Authorities said reports indicated that some individuals could have been trapped in the collapsed structure, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Security and rescue teams drawn from the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Government Administrative Officers and the Kenya Red Cross were rapidly deployed to the scene to conduct search and rescue operations.

So far, two individuals have been rescued from the collapsed wall. One of the victims sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, while the other escaped the incident unharmed.

The office of the Nairobi North County Commissioner said it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as rescue and assessment operations continue.

Officials said confirmation of any casualties or injuries will be communicated through official channels once verified.

Members of the public have been urged to keep away from the affected area to allow emergency teams to conduct rescue operations without obstruction.

Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba appealed for cooperation from residents as authorities work to secure the site and establish whether additional people may still be trapped in the debris.
