Muslim pilgrims wrapped up this year’s Hajj, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, after performing the final rites at Islam’s holiest site in Mecca.
The pilgrimage concluded with the farewell Tawaf, in which participants circle the Kaaba seven times inside the Grand Mosque. This ritual signifies the end of the sacred duties and allows pilgrims to offer final prayers before departing the city.
What is a pilgrim, pilgrimage, and what makes Hajj unique?
A pilgrim is a person who undertakes a religious journey to a sacred site to fulfill acts of devotion, worship, and spiritual renewal. A pilgrimage is that journey itself.
Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, and it is obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to perform it. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, alongside the declaration of faith, daily prayer, charity or zakat, and fasting during Ramadan.
Mecca earns its designation as Islam’s holiest city because it is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the site of the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure toward which Muslims worldwide direct their prayers. Muslims believe the Kaaba was originally built by the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham in the Bible) and his son Ismail as a house of worship.
Hajj 2025
The event, which follows the Islamic lunar calendar and occurs in the month of Dhul-Hijjah, draws Muslims from diverse nations, cultures, and backgrounds, serving as a powerful symbol of unity in the faith.
Saudi authorities reported that 1,673,230 pilgrims took part this year, with the vast majority—about 1.51 million—travelling from outside the kingdom and the remainder being Saudi citizens and residents.
Over several days, pilgrims moved between the tent city of Mina, the plain of Arafat, and Muzdalifah, performing a series of rites that trace the footsteps of prophetic tradition. The standing at Mount Arafat, known as the Day of Arafah, ranks among the most spiritually significant moments; many Muslims regard it as the pinnacle of the pilgrimage, a time for intense prayer, reflection, and seeking forgiveness.
Pilgrims also carried out the symbolic stoning of the devil in Mina, hurling pebbles at pillars that represent the rejection of temptation and the devil. The rite commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s refusal of Satan’s attempts to dissuade him from obeying God’s command.
As crowds converged for the final tawaf, Saudi officials emphasised the extensive logistical operation deployed to ensure safety and order. Thousands of security personnel, healthcare workers, transportation teams, and volunteers were deployed to manage the massive movement of people and ensure safety amid the dense crowds.
Saudi officials are overseeing the continued departure of international participants in the days ahead.
Authorities described this year’s Hajj as proceeding smoothly and according to plan, with an atmosphere centered on worship and devotion.
Hajj remains a cornerstone of Islamic practice. For those who complete it, the experience often marks a profound personal transformation, according to many.
