Safaricom CEO and the Meru University Chancellor, Peter Ndegwa, has been conferred the degree of Doctor of Business Management (Honoris Causa) of Meru University of Science and Technology during the 12th Graduation Ceremony.

The celebration is part of Mr Ndegwa’s unwavering dedication to advancing education, fostering innovation, and driving impactful change both within the university and the wider community.

Dr Ndegwa commended the university for its remarkable achievements in research, innovation, and technology aimed for sustainable development.  “As this is the first graduation ceremony I am presiding over as Chancellor, and with the new honour of a doctorate, this is a significant moment for me as it undoubtedly is for all of today’s graduands.”

The theme for this year’s graduation, held on 4th October 2024, was “Mainstreaming Research, Innovation, and Technology for Sustainable Development.

Meru University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor, Prof Romanus Odhiambo, congratulated Mr Ndegwa on his well-deserved Award of Doctor of Business Management (Honoris Causa). The Vice-Chancellor noted having witnessed firsthand the significant impact of Mr Ndegwa’s leadership at Safaricom PLC.

He emphasized that the Chancellor’s support had empowered Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) to make meaningful strides in technology, education, and community development, highlighting the recently held MUST Innovation and Exhibition Week (MUSTIEW 2024) and the official launch of the Artificial Intelligence Institute and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) Lab as key examples of this impact.

This year was a milestone for Meru University of Science and Technology as the University celebrated the graduation of over 2900 students – the largest cohort in the institution’s history. Behind these impressive numbers are individual stories of hard work, determination and dreams coming true. This growth speaks to our commitment to opening doors of opportunity for more young people, ensuring that they receive the quality education they deserve.

Established as a fully-fledged university following the award of its charter on March 1st, 2013, Meru University of Science and Technology has continually strived to foster a culture of innovation, research, and academic excellence.
