Ruto Rewards Harambee Starlets With Millions After 3–1 Triumph Over Gambia

President William Ruto has announced a multi-million shilling reward for the Harambee Starlets following their impressive 3–1 victory over The Gambia in the first leg of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers at Nyayo Stadium.

The head of state praised the team’s spirited performance and said their win was a testament to the discipline, talent, and determination driving Kenya’s resurgence in women’s football.

“Hearty congratulations to our gallant Harambee Starlets for the 3–1 triumph over Gambia, a commanding performance that propels Kenya closer to qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco,” President Ruto said.

“This victory speaks to the discipline, talent, and determination of our women footballers, and the steadfast leadership of the technical bench. You have made Kenya proud and reaffirmed our nation’s growing strength in women’s sports.”

Millions in Rewards for Starlets

True to his pledge to elevate sports incentives, President Ruto confirmed that the Starlets will receive financial bonuses similar to those awarded to the men’s national team, Harambee Stars.

Recently, the president awarded KSh1 million to each player and technical staff member of the Harambee Stars after their international victories, with an additional KSh500,000 for drawn matches. In total, the men’s team shared KSh42 million following their win earlier this year.

Building on that commitment, the president is expected to extend comparable rewards to the Harambee Starlets, alongside other incentives such as affordable housing units under the government’s sports empowerment programme.

“As you prepare for the return leg, know that the entire nation stands behind you. Your success is our pride. Keep shining, keep winning, and let the spirit of Harambee continue to unite and propel our nation forward,” Ruto added.

Post-Match Report

The Starlets produced a dominant performance to outclass The Gambia under the floodlights at Nyayo Stadium. Jentrix Shikangwa opened the scoring early in the first half before Fatoumata Sowe equalized for the visitors.

Captain Mwanahalima “Dogo” Adam restored Kenya’s lead with a stunning strike before substitute Violet Nanjala sealed the victory with a late tap-in. Goalkeeper Lilian Awuor was equally impressive, pulling off key saves to preserve Kenya’s advantage.

The 3–1 result gives Harambee Starlets a commanding lead heading into next week’s return leg in Banjul. A draw or narrow loss will see them qualify for the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, their first appearance since 2016.

Fans at Nyayo Stadium celebrated the win in song and dance, waving Kenyan flags as the players did a victory lap.

With the president’s cash reward and national support behind them, the Starlets will now focus on finishing the job away from home and securing their place among Africa’s elite.
