The government has underscored the strategic importance of the ongoing reconstruction and expansion of the Rironi–Kamandura Interchange, describing it as a transformative project that will unlock one of Kenya’s most critical transport corridors.
In a statement, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the project, being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), is “a strategic, interlinked infrastructure project designed to unlock one of the country’s most critical transport corridors.”
“The reconstruction and expansion of the Rironi–Kamandura Interchange is deliberately targeted at decongesting the main gateway between Nairobi and the Rift Valley,” Omollo said, noting that the benefits of the project would extend far beyond the immediate area.
“Its impact will be felt across Western Kenya and the Nyanza region.”
According to the PS, the scope of the works goes beyond minor upgrades and entails a complete overhaul of the existing interchange.
“The project involves the full reconstruction of the Rironi Interchange, including the development of new slip roads, directional loops and upgraded approach roads linking Waiyaki Way (A8), Limuru Road and the Mai Mahiu Road (A8 South),” he said.
Omollo said the upgrades are expected to significantly reduce the chronic traffic congestion that has for years characterised the junction, especially during peak hours and holiday seasons.
“This project will significantly ease the long-standing traffic snarls that have plagued this interchange for years,” he said.

He added that safety considerations are a central component of the project.
“The works will also address the perennial accidents associated with conflicting traffic movements and inadequate road geometry, thereby enhancing overall road safety for motorists and pedestrians alike,” Omollo said.
Beyond easing congestion and improving safety, the PS said the project will deliver broader economic and social benefits by improving mobility and connectivity.
“Through reduced travel times, improved reliability and smoother freight and passenger movement, the project will strengthen regional connectivity,” he said.
Omollo noted that improved connectivity would in turn support economic activity and improve the quality of life for road users.
“This intervention will support economic growth and significantly improve the daily commuting experience for thousands of Kenyans who rely on this corridor,” he said.
The PS said the Rironi–Kamandura Interchange project reflects the government’s commitment to using infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic integration, safety and efficient movement of people and goods across regions.
