Gump Suzuki, the internationally-acclaimed Japanese adventurer, was recently in Kenya as part of his ongoing, global rickshaw adventure. The multi-talented Suzuki, who is not only a rickshaw traveller but also an actor and filmmaker, toured the country and engaged Kenyan media and fans. Pulled by a person who walks or runs, a rickshaw is a human-powered vehicle, typically a two-wheeled cart with a seat for passengers.

Fuelled by his motto of “Just For Fun,” Suzuki’s visit that was halted by the nationwide anti-Finance Bill protests in June was a short but exciting blend of exploration and personal challenge. “The spirit of ‘Just For Fun’ inspires me to seek adventure and enjoyment wherever I go,” said Suzuki. “My journey to Kenya is about exploring its wonders while pushing my own limits, driven by curiosity and a love for adventure.”

The tour marked Suzuki’s long-awaited foray into Africa. Having already traversed Asia, Australia, Europe, and America in his rickshaw, the continent held a particular allure. “Africa has always been a looming destination on my map,” Suzuki expressed. “The diverse landscapes, wildlife, vibrant cultures, and the iconic Maasai tribe all hold immense intrigue for me, and I couldn’t wait to experience it all firsthand.”

Back in Japan, Gump started working as a rickshaw driver in Asakusa to save money for his travels. It was here that he fell in love with the rickshaw, and the idea of combining it with his global adventures was born. “I wanted to try something no one else dared to do,” Gump recalls, explaining why he chose to travel the world with a rickshaw.

Gump Suzuki has run over 20,000 kilometres across the globe with his rickshaw. Some of his notable achievements include:

  • Asia Crossing (2016–2017): 5,000 km
  • Europe Crossing (2017): 2,500 km
  • Australia Journey (2018): 1,000 km
  • USA Crossing (2019–2023): 7,600 km

His adventures have been documented in the film JUST FOR FUN, which has been screened in Japan and internationally, touching thousands of hearts.

His Kenyan adventure that began on 20th June all through to 6th July, immersed him in the country’s rich tapestry of nature, wildlife, diverse communities, and the cultural heritage of the Maasai people. Since 2016, Suzuki has been on a unique mission: to become the first person to travel all five continents on a rickshaw, documenting his experiences on social media. “My dream is to travel the world with my trusty rickshaw,” he shared.

Fuelled by his motto of “Just For Fun,” Suzuki’s visit that was halted by the nationwide anti-Finance Bill protests in June was a short but exciting blend of exploration and personal challenge.

Beginning his journey in traditional tabi socks, pulling a rickshaw weighing over 265 pounds, Suzuki has already conquered 11 countries and regions, covering a staggering 18,641 miles. Despite facing hardships and dangers along the way, Suzuki credits the kindness of strangers and the support of his followers for his impressive progress. This remarkable journey has even earned him the nickname “The Real Forrest Gump” among his fans.

This journey is more than just running — it’s about connecting people worldwide through shared experiences. With his RUN FOR SNACK initiative, Gump invites people to run with him virtually. Participants contribute small donations, which are used to buy snacks for children along his route, creating moments of joy and connection.

For Gump, the rickshaw is more than a mode of transport — it’s a tool for sparking conversations and building connections. His journey is a testament to the power of human interaction, proving that the simplest joys, like running, can bring people together.

Gump’s story continues to unfold as he approaches new horizons. Accompanied by a team of five, including three cameramen and a local Kenyan coordinator, the goal is to reach Cape Town, South Africa, by January 2025.
