FAKE: Raila Odinga’s Security Has Not Been Withdrawn

Raila Odinga security
The report comes as Raila Odinga, who is also the ODM Party leader, takes up the official opposition role in Kenyan politics.

A Facebook post shared on 29th November 2022 claiming Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s security has been withdrawn is false. The post was short on details only saying, “Raila Odinga’s security withdrawn.. Karma is real.”

The information was shared by various Facebook users here and here.

A review of the post indicated that it is fake news. We did a Google keyword search, but it did not yield any information about Raila’s security being interfered with lately, apart from the 2017 reports of his security being withdrawn.

The search also revealed a debunk of a fake report on Raila Odinga during the August 9th elections, where a news alert purportedly by Capital FM claimed that his security detail, and that of his running mate Martha Karua, had been beefed up in preparation for the announcement of the final tally.

Meanwhile, we reached out to the Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s Secretariat Communications Director, Mr Dennis Onyango, who refuted the claims stating that Raila security is intact. “There’s nothing of the sort,” Mr Onyango said in a phone interview. “Raila Odinga’s security is still in place. Ignore the fake news.”

The report comes as Raila Odinga, who is also the ODM Party leader, takes up the official opposition role in Kenyan politics after losing the presidential race in the August general elections won by President William Ruto.

The claim that Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance leader Raila Odinga’s security has been withdrawn has been dismissed by the opposition leader’s office and is thus fake.
