Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has given an update on the progress of the Raila Odinga International Sports Complex, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering the flagship project on schedule through enhanced inter-agency coordination.
Dr. Omollo said he led a multi-agency assessment visit and consultative meeting at the site to comprehensively review the status of implementation and address emerging issues that could affect delivery timelines.
“With a multi-agency team, we conducted an assessment visit and consultative meeting at the Raila Odinga International Sports Complex to comprehensively review the status of project implementation,” Dr. Omollo said.
He noted that the engagement focused on strengthening collaboration among government agencies, monitoring adherence to agreed timelines and performance benchmarks, and addressing operational, safety and security considerations critical to the successful completion of the project.
“The engagement prioritised enhanced inter-agency coordination, evaluated adherence to agreed timelines and performance benchmarks, and addressed emerging operational, safety and security considerations, with a view to ensuring seamless execution and timely delivery of the project,” he added.
The meeting brought together senior government officials, including Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru (Defence), Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi (Sports) and Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke (Broadcasting and Telecommunications), underscoring the whole-of-government approach being applied to the project.
The Raila Odinga International Sports Complex, formerly known as Talanta Stadium, is a 60,000-seater ultra-modern facility being developed in Nairobi as part of Kenya’s preparations for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The stadium is expected to serve as a key venue during the tournament and a long-term hub for international sporting and entertainment events.
Beyond AFCON 2027, the complex is designed to meet global standards, featuring advanced broadcast infrastructure, modern safety systems, and athlete-friendly facilities aimed at positioning Kenya as a competitive destination for major continental and international competitions.
Government officials say regular site assessments and coordinated oversight remain critical to ensuring the project is delivered on time and to specification, as Kenya accelerates investments in sports infrastructure to support talent development, tourism and economic growth.
