The government is expanding modern market infrastructure across the country as part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), with new facilities targeting small-scale traders and rural entrepreneurs.
Speaking during a visit to Siaya County, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the development of modern markets is aimed at improving working conditions for traders while strengthening grassroots economies.
One such project is the Obambo Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Alego Usonga, Siaya County, which officials say reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and dignified trading spaces.
The two-storey market, launched in early 2024 under the Economic Stimulus Programme, is designed to replace informal stalls with modern trading spaces equipped with improved amenities to support business operations.
According to the PS, the project has benefited from strong grassroots coordination led by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, ensuring effective implementation and community engagement throughout its development.
Once operational, the Obambo ESP Market is expected to boost local commerce by providing organised trading spaces for farmers, traders and small business owners from the surrounding communities.
Officials say the facility will also help reduce post-harvest losses by providing better storage and handling conditions for agricultural produce while improving hygiene and safety standards.
The market is expected to particularly benefit rural women, who make up a significant share of small-scale traders in local markets and play a central role in sustaining household incomes.
Omollo said expanding modern markets in rural areas is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen grassroots economic activity, create opportunities for micro and small enterprises and improve livelihoods across communities.
Once completed, the Obambo ESP Market is expected to serve as a key commercial hub in Alego Usonga, supporting trade, stimulating household incomes and contributing to local economic growth in Siaya County.
